Solar Returns are appealing because they condense an entire year’s potential into a single chart read in relationship to the natal chart. As the method draws upon foundational principles of natal analysis, it offers a natural and accessible way to deepen and extend your existing astrological skills.
This five-week course is grounded in the work of Abu Maʿshar, one of the most influential astrologers of the 9th century and author of the seminal text On the Revolutions of the Years of Nativities, translated by Benjamin Dykes, PhD.
Together, we will explore the essential principles underlying Solar Return interpretation, giving you the tools to begin working confidently with these charts in your own study and practice. While many interpretive techniques mirror those used in natal astrology, the Solar Return framework requires subtle adjustments to account for its focus on a one-year slice of time.
A central teaching of this course is that Solar Returns were never intended to be read in isolation. Although modern practice often treats the Solar Return as a standalone chart, we will return to the original methods in which it was designed to function—always in relationship with the natal chart, timelords and transits.
The outcome is that students will be able to look at any Solar Returns chart and draw out some significant themes for the year based on the techniques delivered during this course. In addition, students will gain clarity on how a prediction can be formed by combining various forecasting tools and holistically assessing their interactions within the annual chart.
