
HL102 – Introduction to Latin for Astrologers – Summer 2024-25
This course offers an introduction to the basics of the Latin language, focusing on grammar, syntax, and foundational vocabulary. Students will develop a solid grounding in Latin that supports further self-study.
The course emphasizes astrological vocabulary and concepts from astrological texts, providing a unique thematic focus. Instruction combines lectures with engaging activities designed to foster both active and passive learning styles. No prior knowledge of Latin is required—this course is open to all who are curious about the language as well as its historical and practical applications.
Weekly Topics:
1. Introduction to the Latin language (history, inflected language, alphabet and pronunciation); Latin’s relationship to astrology; learn how to conjugate a Latin verb, begin to understand the structure of forming Latin phrases; learn and actively use basic astrological vocabulary of signs, planets in a real context
2. The grammatical meaning of the nominative and accusative cases and be able to identify them in a simple phrase; identify whether a noun belongs to the first or second declension based on its dictionary entry; comprehend linking sentences via the conjunction
3. Learn two new cases: the genitive and dative: identify their forms in a sentence and be able to translate and comprehend the meaning; using the o new cases, create more descriptive and complex sentences
4. The adverb; the preposition; the ablative case means/instrument, expressions of place (to/from which, where); practice using the ablative of means and ablative of place in astrological contexts
5. How to use adjectives with and without nouns; see how adjectives are used substantively in astrological texts; learn additional uses of the genitive and ablative to create more complex meanings and expressions; learn some practices for continuing studies of Latin
The goal is for the student to identify the fundamental grammatical forms of the Latin verb (conjugations 1 and 2) and noun cases (declensions 1 and 2), which allow for syntactical comprehension of sentences and concepts.
The student will learn vocabulary that is most common in astrological texts which will deepen the student’s connection to the etymology and history of the astrological tradition.
Prerequisites:
No previous knowledge is required; it is helpful, however, if the student has a natural inclination toward language, words, communication, writing, etc. Learning an ancient language requires commitment and careful attention and focus.
